With all the searching I’ve been doing for my great-grandfathers who did serve in the war I almost forget about those that didn’t. My great-grandfather, Frederick Smith, was a collier, and as such was exempt from service. As luck would have it my father actually gave me my great-grandfather’s exemption cards and I filed them away some years ago and haven’t seen them since. Pieces of history like this often get overlooked so I thought it was important to bring it up, and have included images of the cards below.
